I’m going to weigh in on the Trayvon Martin case, and I’m going to do it using pictures. Let’s start with the one above.
Picture of Trayvon at what appears to be 13. Trayvon was really 17 (and 6’2” from what I read) at the time of the incident. He looks more like this:

Let’s be honest: The picture above does not illicit the same warm-fuzzies that the picture of little Trayvon did. It’s a pretty distinct difference. The press certainly seems to be tugging on the ol’ heart strings. And just as a note, judging either party by the color of their skin, or their personal aesthetic appearance is moronic when it comes to true justice.
Picture of smiling, young, and tiny Martin is contrasted with bloated, down-cast, and prison-orange framed Zimmerman: The picture is also several years old. This is immediately a dishonest representation of the situation. Zimmerman now looks like this:

That picture certainly instills much less fear than the first. So from the original picture, neither
I have another problem: “White Hispanic” keeps cropping up in the media. I find this to be a ludicrous turn of phrase. First, Zimmerman looks pretty Hispanic to me. If it’s a racial crime, let’s be clear about race. Otherwise I’m going to start calling Obama our first “White Black president.” And again I reiterate, framing this in terms of race is jumping to conclusions that the evidence simply doesn’t warrant: We don’t know what the intent behind the shooting yet.
And really, that’s my biggest objection to this whole scenario: The court of the media has already decided that this was a hate crime, and has found Zimmerman guilty, when we don’t have the information to make a call either way. If America really wants justice—not justice for Blacks, or Whites, or Hispanics, or anything less than justice for all—then we must urge that a fair and speedy trial be held, that the facts be found out, and that a verdict based on those facts be delivered and enforced, whatever that verdict is.
This has been my two cents.
Edit: Just to be clear, I’m not in favor of a man who wantonly shot an unarmed teenager simply because he was wearing a hoodie, either. That’s not right, and should not be defended. But if, as stated, Trayvon attacked Zimmerman, then there is more to the story than “man kills teenager.” Mostly this post was simply to point out that “white male shoots black child” is not an accurate summation of the case, and I’m sick of seeing it everywhere.

From The Atlantic Wire:

Sanford, Florida, is having a hard time dealing with the intense national media scrutiny over the Trayvon Martin case, but it’s learning: It only took a day to walk back its threat to arrest reporters for asking off-duty city employees questions. That’s a practice known as “reporting,” but on Wednesday Sanford decided to call it “stalking.” Then it quickly realized that arresting reporters is no way to improve the tenor of your media image, and 24 hours after issuing the threat, it was rescinded.
